So anyway, my cousin has a 97 Yamaha V-Max 700 triple that he has been trying to get running. So I went up to help him and figured out that it wasn't getting any fuel. The whole fuel system needed to be cleaned out. Gas tank was full of garbarge, as was the fuel pump etc. So we completely cleaned the tank. Replaced the fuel filter, pulled the float bowl plugs and sprayed out the carbs. Found that one of the airbox boots was half off the carb etc. So we got everything back together, new gas. First pull and it fired right up. Sweet. He didn't have a chance to take it for a ride until last night. He called me up and said it ran fine for a little while and then on his ride back, when he would slow down, the rpms would raise up to about 3000rpms, making a wired noise and would not respond when he would grab that throttle. He would have to choke it and gas it until it would come back and then it would only run at half or full throttle. Anytime he would slow down, grab the brake, the engine would start making that noise and the rpms would raise up to 2500-3000rpms. Got it back home and then it started to run fine for a few minutes before acting up again. I looked online last night for possible solutions and found something about a throttle overide system using magnets that is known to fail on these sleds. Don't know if that might be the problem or if it might be related to something else. Does anyone know about possible fixes for this or if that is even the problem? Come on sled heads, any help would be great.

I have seen the magnets on the side of the carbs before, but usually that will kill the engine as soon as the throttle is opened. You can over ride the throtle safety switch. There usually is a two plug connector under the handle bar pad that you can jump out. I'm wondering if he has a throttle cable or slide hanging up. After all he did have a couple of yo-yo's tinkering with the carbs. Not sure what the noise is though. Detonation? It almost sounds like the motor is going lean.

Disconnected the TORS and it fixed the main problem of it not wanting to run unless full throttle but now it is pissing out gas through the exhaust. Think I need to take the carbs completely off and really clean them. Floats must be stuck. And it was just one yo-yo tinkering with it Mooney.

Sounds lean to me, thats prob why its revving up. Or there is a tear in the carb boot(s).
Solution? Bring it to Scrap-It and get a few bucks for it.
Oh, and its making noise cause its a triple. Triples make noise...lots of it.

That's what my cousin keeps telling me. But it's tough to work on it in my spare time when it's in Marlow. Just trying to help him out. I think if we tear the carbs apart and clean them out we should be all set. There was so much shit in the tank, fuel filter was rusted and gunk in the float bowl drain bolts that I think the carbs must be all gummed up. It should be lots of fun working on those. Damn sleds.
